1969 Grand Prix Model J

| This car was owned by my brothers from 1971 to 1975. They bought it as a low-optioned model J with about 16,000 miles on the odometer. The car came equipped with the standard 10.5:1 cr 400 4bbl, TH400, PS, PB and AM radio. No A/C, no power locks, power windows, 8-track, anything, which made this the perfect GP to set up for some street racing. Modifications to the car included 15 x 7" Keystone Rouges with J60 15 Concordes out back and E60 15 up front along with a B&M shift kit, 3.73 posi and exhaust cut-outs (dumps). The Q-Jet received an H-O Racing carb kit and the distributor was recurved (H-O Racing) to boost low and mid range torque. Best E.T. was a 14.38 @ 100 run at US 30 shifting at 4700 rpm with a terrible bog off the line. If the Q-Jet secondary air valve was tightened up about 1/4 turn or a little more, maybe some sub 14 sec times could have been attained that evening. Street races against my '70 RAIII Judge were real close with 'da Judge just edging out the Prix on top end. |
